Having DID is like:
This is the experience of our system, not to be interpreted as anyone else’s.
(Yes, I/we often use plural pronouns)
Explaining co-consciousness in theater terms:
When a personality inhabits the body, or “fronts,” as we call it, they are on stage.
Sometimes more than one personality or alter is on stage, but for me, if there is more than one on stage, the ones not currently talking or looking or using the primary facial senses-
They are behind the stage curtains talking to the stage.
Sometimes loudly.
Those are the personalities that the stage personality can see and hear. And they can see and hear the person fronting.
Then there are those alters who can see what is happening on the front or stage, but the stage doesn’t know they are watching- they are in the green room.
Others are preparing to front but can’t really hear what is happening, but they know there is a stage and they are getting ready to take it- they are in the dressing room.
Some parts of my brain have no interest in being in the front and can’t see or hear anything on the sides of the stage or in the green room or dressing rooms- they are in the audience.
When the audience accidentally ends up on stage- all hell can break loose in the brain. The cast members-those who USUALLY front-get very upset. The audience doesn’t know their “lines. “In other words, the people in front now don’t understand the schedule, where the body is supposed to be, and what we should be doing.
Then there are the people not invited to the play. They have no idea there is a play on the stage, and sometimes they can end up on the stage of a play they don’t know exists.
Those personalities are the ones who deny that we have Dissociative identity disorder. They don’t know they are in a system. But many people in the cast, those who usually front, understand about the uninvited people and try to advertise their existence to the outer population.
Outer, and yet within the system.
The primary personalities for me currently are Maggie, Marti, and Ellie, are also the play’s co-directors.
They take turns on stage and directing and producing the content on the stage.
There’s an entire universe surrounding the theater, but the community around it are all personalities within my system.
The MyMesSystem. In the Innerprise.
The stage is the Innerprise.
